Heavy fog causes 60 flights to be cancelled and 250 delayed at Delhi airport

Delhi was engulfed in dense fog on Monday morning, disrupting air travel. Several flights from Indira Gandhi International Airport were cancelled and hundreds were delayed, resulting in long waits and inconvenience for passengers.

The nation's capital, Delhi, was shrouded in a thick blanket of fog on Monday morning. This dense winter fog has severely impacted both public life and air traffic.

Due to low visibility, dozens of flights from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport were canceled, while hundreds were delayed.

Over 60 flights cancelled, over 250 delayed

Due to extremely low visibility in the morning, more than 60 flights were cancelled at Delhi Airport. Additionally, approximately 250 flights were delayed.

Some flights were even diverted to other cities for security reasons. This caused significant inconvenience to passengers and resulted in long waits at the airport.

Airlines have already issued warnings

In view of the dense fog, several airlines, including IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet, issued advisories for passengers. The airlines clearly stated that flight cancellations and delays were possible due to the inclement weather. Passengers were advised to check their flight status before arriving at the airport.

IndiGo and Air India flights were the most affected.

IndiGo cancelled 36 flights to Delhi due to bad weather. Air India also cancelled 19 flights. Air India stated that due to low visibility, it was impossible to operate flights safely, so this decision was taken with passenger safety in mind.

Operations gradually returned to normal

As the day progressed, the situation improved slightly. In the afternoon, the Delhi airport administration reported that visibility on the runway was improving and flight operations were gradually returning to normal. However, it added that some flights may still be affected.

Flights with CAT III system get relief

The airport authority stated that aircraft equipped with the CAT III system can safely land and take off even in extremely low visibility. Flights that lacked this feature were more affected by the fog, resulting in numerous flights being delayed or cancelled.

Why did it have a greater impact?

Delhi Airport is the busiest airport in the country, with approximately 1,300 flight movements daily. Even minor weather disturbances can impact the entire system. With the onset of winter, the fog problem is expected to worsen in the coming days.
