UPI New Rules: UPI rules have changed from February, with a direct impact on Google Pay and PhonePe users

New regulations are being implemented in the UPI payment system in February 2026. Transactions will now be faster, and failed payments will be resolved more quickly. Security checks and user controls have also been strengthened.

UPI New Rules 2026: If you use UPI for everyday payments, this update is crucial. Starting in February 2026, several new rules related to the UPI system are being implemented, impacting all apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and BHIM.

These changes aim to make payments faster, safer, and more reliable. These include significant improvements ranging from transaction speed to security and user control.

Now UPI transactions will be completed in 10 seconds.

Under the new rules, UPI transactions and associated API responses must be completed within a maximum of 10 seconds. Previously, this time limit was 30 seconds, which often resulted in payments being delayed.

The API is the digital bridge that facilitates communication between your UPI app and your bank. This speeding up of the system will ensure smoother payments even during peak hours, benefiting both merchants and customers.

Growing digital payment traffic will get support

The use of digital payments is rapidly increasing in the country, and UPI is setting new records every month. Consequently, the pressure on the system has also increased.

The new rules have been introduced to reduce the problem of transaction failures during high traffic. Processing on platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm is now expected to be more stable.

Security checks and user controls will be strengthened

The new UPI framework further strengthens security. Additional verification steps will be implemented, especially for large-value transactions. Clear confirmation screens will be displayed before payments to prevent accidental money transfers. Managing and canceling auto-debit and subscription payments is also being simplified, giving users greater control over their money.

Block inactive IDs, failed payments, and spam requests

UPI IDs that haven't been used for a long time may be temporarily restricted. Reactivation will be required to reduce the risk of fraud. A provision for faster resolution of failed or stuck transactions has also been added.

In many cases, refunds will be available within a few hours. Additionally, a limit will be imposed on the number of collect requests, or notifications requesting payment, to reduce spam.
