A chip embedded in a tooth will reveal the whereabouts of dementia patients and the elderly; developed by KGMU doctors
Doctors from the Department of Prosthodontics, Crowns and Bridges at KGMU, Lucknow, have developed a new technology that will make it easier to track the location of the elderly, especially those suffering from diabetes and dementia.
Doctors at King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, have developed a technology that could prove to be a game-changer in the safety of the elderly.
This new technology adds location tracking to dentures, making it easier to find elderly people suffering from dementia or diabetes if they lose their way. A chip will be implanted in the denture, which will contain the patient's complete details.
Dr. Anushika Singh, Dr. Swarnim, and Dr. Sadhna Singh, under the guidance of Professor Puran Chand, Head of the Department of Prosthodontics, Crowns, and Bridges at KGMU, developed this technique.
The technique was awarded first prize at the 53rd National Conference of the Indian Prosthodontic Society, held in Mumbai. The three doctors were honored for their innovative work.
Professor Puran Chand explained that elderly people with dementia often forget their home address or lose their way. This technology will help track their location using their dentures.
Furthermore, even if the elderly lose their dentures, they can be easily found. This technology will also prove extremely useful for diabetic patients, making their safety and monitoring easier.
This technology is embedded within dentures, which are artificial tooth replacement devices. The technology is currently under patenting, so its detailed name has not yet been released. Once the patent is granted, this technology will become available to the general public.
This technology will not only add a new dimension to the field of dentistry but will also bring great relief to families caring for the elderly. KGMU's efforts are being praised nationwide.
It is hoped that this technology will soon make life easier for millions of people. This is a prime example of how medical innovation can solve common problems.
