Can constipation lead to cancer? Learn why doctors say it's dangerous

Constipation is a common problem, affecting everyone at some point. But can prolonged constipation lead to cancer? We spoke with a cancer specialist to find out.

Constipation is a common problem. Many people suffer from it. People resort to everything from powders to medications to treat it. In many cases, it resolves, but if it persists for a long time, it can pose a health risk. But can constipation also cause colon cancer? Let's learn more from a cancer specialist.

Constipation occurs when stool doesn't pass properly from the intestines. Poor eating habits, lack of water, and a lack of fiber in the diet can all lead to constipation.

If constipation persists for a long time, it can also cause illness. But does it cause cancer? Dr. Rohit Kapoor of the Oncology Department at Max Hospital explains this.

Can constipation cause colon cancer?

Dr. Rohit Cooper says that prolonged constipation can lead to a number of health problems, including hemorrhoids. While it's not dangerous if it resolves within a few days, it can be dangerous if it persists for months or years.

Chronic constipation prevents stool from passing through the intestines, which can lead to inflammation of the intestinal lining. This inflammation can lead to the formation of polyps, which in some cases can progress to intestinal cancer.

Dr. Kapoor says that if someone has been suffering from constipation for a long time , such as five to six months, and still hasn't found relief, it can lead to problems like hemorrhoids and fissures, which can become serious over time. While these don't always lead to cancer, the risk still exists. There are some symptoms that shouldn't be ignored.
