OpenAI ChatGPT OS: OpenAI no longer wants to limit ChatGPT to just an app or chatbot. The company is working to transform it into a full-fledged operating system. 

As part of this strategy, OpenAI has appointed Glen Coates as the new Head of App Platform. This announcement comes at a time when OpenAI is also working on AI-powered devices.

Currently, ChatGPT operates as an app and platform, but its AI agents, built-in search, and context-understanding capabilities also make it an interface. 

Third-party apps have already been integrated through the ChatGPT Apps feature, which is why OpenAI sees it as the next step towards an operating system.

Why is Glen Coates' entry important?

Glen Coates recently joined OpenAI and has been appointed Head of App Platform. He previously served as Vice President and Head of Product at Shopify. 

On the social media platform X, he stated clearly that his goal is to help transform ChatGPT into an operating system. He will report to Nick Turley, Head of ChatGPT at OpenAI.

How will ChatGPT work like an operating system?

Speaking to TechCrunch, Coates said that in the future, ChatGPT will be a platform where users can use apps for different needs. 

Apps for writing, coding, or connecting with products and services will be available within ChatGPT. In this way, ChatGPT will act as a core system between users, apps, and data.

AI devices and partnerships will provide strength

OpenAI has already built a robust data center network and is working on AI devices, including a partnership with Jony Ive. It also has integrations with apps like Adobe, Canva, and Zillow.

If all of this is combined with ChatGPT's conversational interface, OpenAI could create the world's first AI operating system. However, the company hasn't provided a timeline for its launch.
