TikTok saved Mark Zuckerberg millions of rupees! Without the Chinese app, WhatsApp and Instagram would have been on sale

This decision brings a significant relief to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. A US court has completely dismissed a high-profile case in which the government sought to force Meta to separate Instagram and WhatsApp. 

The court clearly stated that Meta's purchase a decade ago did not in any way create an unfair monopoly in the social media market. This means that Instagram and WhatsApp will now remain solely with Meta.

What were the FTC's allegations?

In 2020, the FTC alleged in Meta that Facebook acquired Instagram (2012) and WhatsApp (2014) solely to prevent new competition. 

The government also claimed that Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and MeWe create a distinct social networking market, distinct from video entertainment platforms like TikTok and YouTube.

The FTC argued that this unique community, which connects friends and family, provides Meta with a significant advantage. Meta leverages this strength to generate substantial profits. Therefore, the government wanted to force Meta to sell Instagram and WhatsApp to restore a level playing field in the marketplace.

What did the court say in its decision?

Judge James Boasberg stated in his ruling that Meta no longer possesses the monopoly power the FTC was talking about. He acknowledged that TikTok, YouTube, and several other platforms have grown large enough to pose significant competition to Facebook and Instagram. The judge wrote that Meta is no longer alone in the market.

Based on data presented in court, he explained that today, only 17% of the time on Facebook is spent viewing their friends' posts. On Instagram, this time is even lower, at just 7%. The rest of the time, people watch AI-based Reels, which are short videos similar to TikTok.

The judge also noted that social networking and social media were previously considered two distinct markets, but now the boundaries between the two have been blurred. 

Today, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube offer nearly identical features. Therefore, it would be incorrect to assume that Meta has any unique control that others lack.

Citing the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, he said, "Just as a person cannot step into the same river twice, social media is constantly changing. The world of five years ago is not the same today."

What did Meta say about the decision?

Meta said the decision demonstrates its strong competition in the market. The company said it is ready to work positively with the new US administration and will continue to invest in technology and innovation in the US.

Why is this case considered a major turning point for the tech industry?

This case lasted five years and sparked a major debate about government power and control over tech companies. If the FTC had won this case, Instagram and WhatsApp could have been separated from Meta, which would have been the biggest split in social media history. 

However, the court clearly stated that competition has now become so intense that it would be wrong to call Meta a monopoly. This decision has also set a new direction for future antitrust cases, as the entire structure of social media has now changed.
