IndiGo also stated that it plans to expand its operations from this second airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, adding more destinations over time.
The Navi Mumbai International Airport is spread over 1,160 hectares and its first phase will consist of one terminal and one runway.
Its annual passenger capacity will be 20 million. The first phase of the airport was built at a cost of ₹19,650 crore and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 8th this year.
IndiGo said it will connect the airport to ten cities in India, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, North Goa, Jaipur, Nagpur, Cochin, and Mangalore, starting December 25th.
Another airline, Akasa Air, said it will begin operations from NMIA in a phased manner starting December 25th. Akasa Air will operate its first flight between Delhi and NMIA, followed by services to Goa, Kochi, and Ahmedabad in the next few days.
The airline said bookings have opened on the Akasa Air website, Android and iOS apps, and through several leading travel agents. The company said it will increase the number of flights to 300 domestic and 50 international.
PM Modi inaugurated it
Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the first phase of Navi Mumbai Airport last month. This airport is India's largest greenfield airport project, developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
It is designed as the second international airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, serving alongside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). It is designed to meet the growing demand for air travel from India's financial capital.
